For me, aging well means that, as a caregiver, I feel fully supported so I can maintain meaningful connections and ensure a high quality of life for everyone involved. It is important that those receiving care feel genuinely respected, appreciated and empowered to remain in their chosen home environment as they grow older. To achieve this vision, we must acknowledge the essential contributions of family caregivers and actively collaborate with them. These caregivers deserve consistent access to respite opportunities, guidance, and mental health support, as well as comprehensive education about their roles and responsibilities. By bolstering their well-being, we help them better serve those in their care.
At the center of this approach is the individual receiving care—the aging caree—whose preferences and values must guide every decision. Their voice should be heard, their desires acknowledged and their daily life enhanced through compassionate support and attentive listening. By placing their goals, beliefs and comfort at the forefront, we can create an environment in which they truly thrive. Ultimately, this person-centered approach, combined with strong support for caregivers and an emphasis on meaningful connection, forms the foundation of aging well, ensuring dignity, fulfillment and respect for all parties involved.
